Do you want to learn about Belize?
Belize is a gorgeous country with breath-taking natural sites, ancient cultures, diverse people and some fabulous writers. Here are the best stories from Ms. Nelmarie Burns class in Belize as chosen by the pre-service teachers at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington (UNCW). Both live near the ocean but are nations apart. Can a group of students teach a group of teachers about their country and culture? Can a group of teachers help Belizean students improve their writing and gain an international audience? We will see!
Directions: Write a several page story (no more than 5 pages double spaced word processed) that illustrates a Belizean setting. It can include a natural habitat or using Belize as a cultural context. The majority of the paper should be written in English using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. But portions can incorporate other languages like Kriol or Spanish if it contributes to the authenticity of the story. (We may need translations!). The most important quality is to be creative, tell an original story and give it an authentic Belizean feel. The stories can be happy, sad, scary, funny or a mixture of whatever you want. We need a lot of good description since we have not been to Belize before. See if you can draw pictures in our minds with your words.
Each paper we received was given feedback from two American teachers. All well-done submissions were posted on this website and disseminated throughout different places in Belize and the United States. These stories may be read internationally to other countries!
